This little pot represents the beginning of a multi-generational appreciation of Native American art and culture –and my family’s private collection. This little pot was purchased by my great-grandmother from Maria Martinez in her home at San Ildefonzo in 1934 during a family vacation from Oklahoma to Red River, New Mexico. The purchase price was $3.00! That summer vacation marked the beginning of what would become an annual event—going to New Mexico. The drive across several states always seemed to culminate at Red River, with numerous stops along the way to experience culture, appreciate the arts, and to purchase souvenirs. Four generations of my family have spent many happy times exploring and learning about the Native Americans of New Mexico—and it all began with a little black pot.
