Sterling silver Navajo bead necklaces are an old tradition with Navajo silversmiths, who either made their beads entirely by hand or made bench beads.

Bench Beads are hand made. Usually the silversmith starts with sterling silver sheet or ingot pieces, which are then stamped, soldered and strung by hand on  a foxtail cord, which is a woven silver cord that can be sterling silver, nickel or other metals. A foxtail cord or chain is more like a cable, its strength and durability comes from weaving many small strands. It is perfect for keeping sterling silver beads safe.
