This is a beautifully balanced tapered jar creating a nice silhouette with elaborate geometric designs on a black on black finish with geometric and paw designs.

All steps in pottery making (coiling, fashioning, sanding) were carried out with precision, because this all led to the way that the pot would look when completed.  After the designs were painted on the polished surface with slip, Carmelita fired her pottery in an outdoor open-air pit using wood and manure as fuel. This jar was hand polished and painted.

Having won First Place in her division of pottery at Indian Market an unprecedented twenty times, Carmelita Dunlap  was designated a National Treasure during the Nixon administration. Work by this potter is something you will definitely want to add it to your collection, because her work is so hard to find.
