Description
Black deep carved traditional storage jar with Avanyu and Kiva step designs
As the daughter of Margaret Tafoya, Toni has always been a traditionalist potter. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she gathers her own clay and manure; she prepares her clay and hand coils her pottery using designs learned from her mother; and before it is ready to be fired, each piece is polished with stones handed down through her family.
Toni is known for her deeply carved pottery, as well as the exquisitely highly polished surfaces. Toni is committed to the precision of her pottery and each piece reflects the time and care she dedicates to her craft and continuing a century’s long family tradition.
Toni has won numerous awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Indian Market and she has been featured in several books. Although Toni hasn’t entered competitions since 2008 at Santa Fe Indian Market, she entered Heard Museum Indian Market in 2017 and won 2nd place in pottery. Her red ribbon accompanies this beautiful piece.
