This magnificent turquoise bison with mother of pearl horns is reminiscent of the bison/buffalo of previous times. The buffalo didn’t range as far south as Zuni Pueblo, but were hunted to the north and east of present day Zuni. The Zuni people also traded items for buffalo hide, horn and meat. Moccasins made of buffalo hide, robes and blankets were all highly prized by the Zuni.
The buffalo is associated with strength, sustenance and bringing snow in the winter.
