Description
The style and content of David Dawangyumptewa’s work are reflective of his Hopi background and Water Clan affiliation. His detailed work focuses on water images–frogs and dragonflies, along with the beautiful turquoise and blue colors of the water. His paintings almost always contain figures interacting with animals. In the Underwater People the contrasting colors and earthen tones depict elements of the earth, the water and the sky. The figures seem to be guarding and protecting the vessels at the bottom and the interspersed crosses, both of which represent life forms. For the Hopi, water brings life and sustenance – whether it is in the form of rain for crops or in the form of aquatic life for food. This picture is an artist’s proof and comes with a certificate of authenticity from the artist.
