Leland Boone is part of the well-known Teddy Weahkee family of Zuni carvers. His mother, Lena Boone, and aunt, Dinah Gasper, are renowned Zuni fetish artists. Leland began his carving career as a buffer for his mother when he was a senior in high school. As he steadily improved and learned the delicate art of carving, he began to carve his own fetishes. Leland said his favorite items to carve are the more traditional ones. His inspiration comes from the form and color of the rock or glass. The primary material he works with today is Murano glass.
Leland is known for his carvings of traditional, directional set Zuni fetishes, although he carves nontraditional pieces as well.
