Description

Exquisite form and simple elegance are perfect words to describe this piece of pottery by Dominique, whose newest works are stone polished red and black pottery highlighted with micaceous swirls. This gorgeous beauty has been fired to a deep red and stone polished by hand to a high glossy sheen.

A perfect sphere of natural beige clay is covered in a slip of red Jemez clay, and bisected with a carved, wavy band. The red slip is then painstakingly stone-polished to a satiny gleam; this involves many painstaking tedious hours of hand polishing.   The carved band shows the underlying beige clay and is painted with four coats of a slip of glittering micaceous clay. This adds a strikingly beautiful contrast. The result, in a word, is gorgeous.

Every step of this traditional process has been beautifully realized: gathering and mixing the clays, coiling, shaping, smoothing, painting with the red clay and micaceous slips, stone polishing, and firing in the ground, as has been done for centuries. Created entirely hand-to-eye, this jewel of a pot is impeccable in every way.

Dominique Toya is a very talented and creative potter who consistently wins ribbons in shows every year. Her pottery is some you will want in your collection.
