Description
This beautiful piece is quite unusual. The design was etched onto the pottery post-firing, as opposed to carving it before the burnishing process. That is what makes the striking contrst in color.
Jordan has created a beautiful shallow bowl using the new clay his family has found on the pueblo. It is a brown clay that fires to a gorgeous chocolate color. He has enhanced this piece with sgraffito designs of clouds and lightning bolts in the center. There are both outlines and carved areas of mountains on each of the four sides just below the rim. The outer edge is also sgraffito carved with weather symbols of mountains, lightning and wind. Sgraffito work is difficult to do as it requires a very steady hand as the applied slip is carved down to the base of the bowl. Jordan’s work is exemplary. Jordan has alternated the polished and matte sections to give them additional contrast. The highly stone polished surface is a striking contrast to the matte areas.
Although Jordan follows the family tradition of gathering clay, creating pottery through coiling and polishing with river stones, he put his own interpretation on the designs. This use of complex forms and designs along with an exceptional polished surface reflect the growing talent with this emerging potter.
