Description
This is an impressive, large, highly polished red lidded cylinder jar with a deeply carved Avanyu (water serpent). It is impressive aesthetically and technically, creating a beautifully elegant form. Notice the absolute precision of the carving: every line is as clean and exact as humanly possible. The lid fits the top like a glove and sits right in the groove carved by Jason. According to Jason, these jars were originally commissioned by collectors to use as cigar boxes. The lids provide a controlled environment. Everything on the jar is flawless: the form, the carving and design, the polished finish. Every bit is created in traditional way – by hand. Jason gathers and mixed his own clay. He then hand coils and carves each of the lines with delicate precision. The jar is hand polished with slip and river rocks which Jason has gathered specifically to fit comfortably in his hand. It takes many, many tedious hours of patient hand polishing to achieve this high gloss sheen on a piece of pottery. This jar is simply elegant. Jason continues to win several awards at Santa Fe Indian Market, as well as other competitions. His work is found in numerous museums and galleries.
