Description

The intricate detail in this painting is marvelous. The feathers in the headdress, the fur on the buffalo, as well as the sinews and muscles of the dancer’s arms and legs stand out plainly against the hide.  There is movement as if he were headed into the plaza for a feast day celebration dance. Note the kiva and ladder behind the dancer which is rich with detail on the adobe bricks and grain of the wood. The animal hide itself adds to the spirituality of the painting. The artist’s signature and hallmark are in the lower right section just below the moccasin feet. The painting is attached to a wooden dowel bound with sinew and is ready to hang from the leather strap at the top.
