Description

Maxine Toya is well known for her pottery figures.  In fact, the first piece of pottery Maxine made was an owl. Her beautiful traditionally-made owls are favorites with collectors of Native American pottery.

This wonderful owl is built by stacking and smoothing hand coils of clay. It is both carved and meticulously painted. The six rows of feathers on the front are carved into the clay.  While they are visually striking, it is the very intricately painted designs on the back and head which are exceptional.  These intricate designs include symbols of rain, clouds, and feathers.  The designs are all matte and painted with clay slips.  Only the eyes are polished.

In pueblo culture, owls are seen as protectors.  Maxine has signed it on the bottom with her corn clan symbol.
