Pueblo: Acoma Pueblo
Artist: Dolores Lewis-Garcia

The popular lightning design evolved from prehistoric designs at Acoma. This small seed pot has been intricately painted with all over lightning symbols. Rain was critical on the mesa for the people of Acoma and the lightning symbols signify a prayer for rain for the people and their crops.

The jar sits straight and level, has a burnished white slip and artistically executed lightning design around the surface. The design spirals out from the small opening at the top – a place seeds for storing until the following spring planting.
