Description

This lovely double corn maiden is hand carved from apple coral with intricate etching and inlay details. The sweet faces of this maiden inlaid with jet. There is a tiny piece of inlaid turquoise suggesting a necklace. The both sides of this beautiful maiden have tiny dragonflies of inlaid jet. Off to her side is a lovely bowl of very tiny pieces of turquoise.

The corn maiden is symbolic of the Zuni legend in which she saved the Zuni tribe from starvation. In Zuni today, the Corn Maidens appear in the spring and bring food offerings for Ceremonies and other rituals. She assures the Zunis a plentiful harvest.

Condition: Excellent – original condition.
Provenance: Purchased from a New Mexico private collector.
